Editing Stations
Video/Audio Editing:
The Media Center provides access to editing workstations on a drop-in basis for periods of up to three hours at a time. Workstations may be renewed depending on availability. The workstations are equipped for video/audio editing and allow patrons to capture video and audio from a variety of source media types: miniDV, VHS, DVD, DVCam, Hi8, LaserDisc, BetaCam and audio cassette tape. Note: Jones Media Center equipment may not be used for duplicating copyrighted materials. See the Dartmouth College copyright policy for more information.
The following Macintosh computers are currently installed:
- iMac - Intel (9)
- Dual-core Intel Mac Pro (8)
The following software is available on the editing stations:
- Video: iMovie '09, iMovie HD 6.3, iDVD '09, FinalCut Express 4.0.1, QuickTime Pro, VisualHub
- Audio: iTunes 9, GarageBand '09, Audacity 1.5, AudialHub
- Graphics: iPhoto '09 and Adobe Creative Suite 5 (Acrobat Pro, Adobe Bridge, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash)
Scanning:
Three editing stations have flatbed color scanners, the Epson Perfection v500 Photo. Two of these stations are also equipped with a slide/35mm film scanner (Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED). Slide/film scanner tutorial.
Other In-House Equipment:
- Hard Drives
LaCie firewire hard drives are available to patrons working on video editing projects. Hard drives may be signed out for up to 7 days (in-house use only).
- Microphones
To record live sound (voice over), use our USB Headset Microphones or USB Tabletop Microphones. Record audio with Audacity or use the voiceover tool in iMovie.
- Sony HD video deck
For importing high definition (HD) footage from miniDV tape.
- MIDI Keyboard
For advanced audio projects, Jones Media Center has a MIDI keyboard for in-house use.
- Memory Card Reader
The PROGear-G5 allows you to download data from flash media cards via hi-speed USB 2.0 connection at a transfer rate of up to 480 Mb/sec. Four card slots accept 28 media formats, including CompactFlash, Microdrive, MiniSD,SD, MultiMedia Card, Memory Stick, SmartMedia, and xD-Picture Card.
- Floppy Disc & Iomega Zip Drives
Need to recover old data? We have a 250MB Zip drive with USB interface and a VST iMac USB floppy drive that reads and writes standard 1.44 MB floppy discs.
